Thursday Thirteen

thursday-thirteen

I should mention that I’m just now getting into Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I realize I’m totally behind the times, and I’m starting to believe that the true tragedy of my first marriage was missing this show…*weg*. So, yeah, you’ve probably heard it all but I don’t care, I’m a Joss convert. Also, I’m only up through season three.

Thirteen Things cool things about Buffy

1. Willow and Xander are friends. There’s some sexual moments and tension, but mostly they are really good friends. Xander calls her every night. That is so…cool.

2. No one kicks ass like Buffy. The writers never make her anything but an equal to her “heroes” and anything but superior to all mortal men and women. Love.

3. Topical issues casually concealed in horror plots–date rape, steroid abuse, domestic violence, teen alcohol use, sex, suicide, divorce…it’s all there, all the real things teens face every day. With vampires.

4. Totally hilarious:
“I’m…uh…in a band”
“Right, she plays the triangle…” Always funny, always spot on.

5. The relationship between Buffy and her mom (we’re talking early seasons, I’m only up through 3 now). I seem to recall many of those same discussions, without the slaying stuff.

6. The theme of needing support, despite being pretty tough on your own.

7. Angel=hot. Spike=hoooooooooooooooot

8. I do know later seasons deal with sexuality in an even deeper way, Willow’s lesbianism. Beautiful.

9. The value placed on knowledge AND strength, restraint AND action. Joss never backs down from a paradox.

10. The depth of characters–both evil and not, they all have a depth that makes you care about them (or hate them a lot, or both).

11. The utter corn of the monsters–I love me some B movie werewolf outfits.

12. I touched on it before, but the feminism of the show resonates strongly with me.

13. Never pulls a punch, even when you know audiences would prefer a character to live, they die if they need to. Awesome.

one of these days I’ll get around to watching Buffy too. sounds good. I guess I was too busy being a professional witch to watch in those days. good TT!

  2. Heather

I never really got into BUFFY but having been a late-comer to CHARMED I understand completely where you’re coming from. *wink*

  3. Amelia June

You know I love me some Charmed, Heather!!

  4. Nancy Bond

My hubby was a huge Buffy fan when the series ran. :) Great list!

  5. Jennifer Shirk

I confess that I missed the Buffy boat, too.

    But I see I’m missing a lot. :)

  7. Gina Ardito

#13 is an excellent point! Not always easy, but necessary to remember.

  8. Elle Fredrix

You know, for all the people that raved about this show, I just never got into it.

  9. Angela James

I must admit that I’m a little jealous you’re just now going through the Buffy seasons. I loved Buffy hugely, I watched it from the start, and I wish I could just be discovering it so I could enjoy it “fresh” all over again :) Have fun!

  10. so lost

Never ever seen even one episode.

  11. Amelia

Those of you who haven’t seen it are missing out! I was, too :)

Angela–I know what you mean. I feel the same way every time I loan out my Firefly DVDs!

Gina–AMEN! I hate it when the author saves everyone at the end “just because”. I really believe in intense writing, from the gut.

  12. Ember

Oh, man, I love every show Joss has produced. I’ll even watch shows he doesn’t produce if he’s directing an episode (The Office).

    Buffy is a classic.
