L’shanah Tovah!
That means happy new year, tonight, for all us Jew types.
I actually googled this to see how to spell it and found this rather amusing and pretentious explanation of Rosh Hashanah:
Rosh Hashanah occurs on the first and second days of Tishri. In Hebrew, Rosh Hashanah means, literally, “head of the year” or “first of the year.” Rosh Hashanah is commonly known as the Jewish New Year. This name is somewhat deceptive, because there is little similarity between Rosh Hashanah, one of the holiest days of the year, and the American midnight drinking bash and daytime football game.
While it is true there is no football, there is frequently drinking…and lots of consumption of very sweet foods. Mmm, noodle kugel. Right now, in fact, I have an orange hazelnut honey cake in the oven. OMG, even the batter is delicious. I had to restrain myself from fetching a spoon for “careful tasting purposes.” Plus I got to use my microplane zester for the first time. I’m so totally Barefoot Contessa today.
Suddenly, I’m hungry…

Shoot, you’re making me hungry, too! And all I’ve got to satisfy it is some cottage cheese…

LOL, I have cottage cheese too, but it is for the kugel!

That’s all fine. What, however, do you think about Obadiah Shoher’s criticism pf Rosh Hashanah as aholiday that has nothing to do with New Year? Here, for example http://samsonblinded.org/blog/petty-paganism.htm

I don’t think it’s a huge secret that monotheism came later and borrowed many traditions from pagans. I do find his other assertions racist, though, and I’m not really interested in pursuing that line of questioning.
