Flash You
I’ve been struggling with that “I hate every word I write” syndrome pretty hardcore, and I decided to loosen up with some flash fic exercises. Can’t promise they’ll be good, but at least they’ll be… something to read?
Coconut Cream Pie
No resistance met the tines of her fork as she slid them into the white cream and pulled out a bite. The bit of crust supporting that bite was left behind, which was okay with Emily. She was one of those “pie first, crust last” people. The hand carrying the fork to her mouth trembled with anticipation of the first bite, but as she parted her lips she realized no amount of imagination could describe the taste of this pie.
Whipped cream lay on her tongue first, a soft and fluffy texture and only a hint of the sweetness that followed. The cream pie itself held most of the flavor, the toasted coconut being that mythical blend of savory and sweet that Emily had only dreamed about in the DL as she mixed pie custard after pie custard on the stove. She wrinkled her nose, but no amount of culinary jealousy could keep her from tasting every note this dessert was singing. So often too sweet, this coconut pie managed to carry all the delicate hints of nut and tang of far away island trees to her taste buds. She did eat the crust, naturally it was perfectly flaky and managed to stave of the soggy fate of so many cream pie crusts. The pie was, in short, heaven.
Which figured, since Emily was dead.
There are the first words I’ve written in, well, longer than I like to admit. *bows*

Awesome.
I’d like to think if there is a heaven, there will be pie. LOTS of pie.
Things like this are, in my opinion, a great way to “loosen up” and start writing. If I’m stuck on Circle, for example, I’ll just write a scene that probably won’t make it into the book, that or a version of a later scene (that I probably also won’t use). It helps get those creative juices flowing.

Oh, yes, there will be pie. XD
And I totally agree, about the quick exercises being the best way to get back in the game. Good luck — this was a delicious start!

I love flash fiction, but I’m not very good at it. The only one I’ve ever been satisfied with is “The Corpse.” Ironically, I’m going through the same thing (and a lack of time) so I’ve been trying some short stories. I feel your pain. Hang in there!
I liked “Coconut Cream Pie.” Course, now I have a craving for pie.

Thank you for that tasty treat!

So was the pie made by Ned?
(Hope you watch Pushing Daisies to get the reference!) Sounds like the kind of reaction one gets from eating his pies.
Great job, BTW!
I need to get back into doing little flashies myself.

Mmmm yum, coconut cream pie. Sometimes you need to take a break and try something new. Good luck with getting out of your slump. *hugs*
